QUICK UPDATE: Stability Fix

Memory issues caused Rex to hang on booting on certain configurations. I've made some fixes to correct this, so as long as you have 1mb it should be working!

Rex and the Galactic Plague – Final Demo Update

It's been a while but hopefully will be worth the wait!

As Rex and the Galactic Plague enters its final stages of development, I’m releasing one last update to the demo, bringing together all the major changes and improvements made since the previous release.

What’s new in this final demo?

  • The two earlier demo versions have been combined: this final version includes the first three full levels of the game
  • The weapons system has been completely overhauled, replacing the original two upgradable weapons with nine distinct weapons (a selection of which are available in the demo)
  • New defensive items give Rex extra chances to survive the Amorni assault—though they’re rarer now, so use them wisely
  • The HUD has been refined to prevent game pauses when loading and unloading boss health bars
  • All story and presentation screens have been reworked to better tell Rex’s story and create a more cohesive world
  • A high score table now tracks your best score—or rather, your field rank (as Space Corps would have it!)

I’ve worked hard to ensure this all runs on a base Amiga 500+ (in my mind, it isn’t really a game unless I can run it on my own machine!). That’s meant making some tough structural decisions to keep everything within memory limits. As the game grew—now up to 9 levels (five more than originally planned!), 10 weapons, and 5 defensive upgrades—the past few weeks have been spent furiously streamlining and reorganising to keep it all running smoothly.

There’s still plenty left to do. The second half of the game needs more extensive playtesting, and further work is required to ensure the full game runs reliably on an A500+ (mine is from the wonderful Cartoon Classics bundle, if you’re curious). With any luck, this will be the final demo—my focus now shifts to preparing a full release later in 2025. That timing depends on how long it takes to polish remaining issues—and whether multi-disk support in Scorpion lands soon enough (I know it’s on the way!).

So please give this latest demo a spin—if nothing else, to see how far it’s come since that first version back at the start of the year. And if you have any feedback—constructive, critical, or otherwise—I’d love to hear it in the comments.

The next update should be the full release, barring anything going drastically wrong.

Until then, log in to Osiris and check your latest Space Corps directives. There’s a pandemic to neutralise.

Oh and don't be looking at intel beyond your pay grade. Space Corps takes no responsibility for any negative effects.

Rex and the Galactic Plague

A hybrid sci-fi shooter for the Commodore Amiga

A deadly virus is wreaking devastation across the stars, reducing civilisations to dust in its wake. Space Corps is overwhelmed and the Amorni - a remorseless synthetic species at the heart of the outbreak - are exploiting the chaos.

There is only one hope - REX, a remote exocontainment unit repurposed for this final, critical mission. Armed and adapted for survival, Rex has been tasked with recovering a vital and life-saving vaccine from the shattered remains of the Thoros Foundation.

But the Amorni are closing in as the virus spreads, and the closer Rex gets to harder they fight...

  • Battle through several different zones, from crumbling facilities to asteroid fields
  • Survive ground and space-based missions with nothing but your wits and the finest Space Corps hardware
  • Fight your way to two different endings and alternate routes
  • Uncover the secret of the Amorni plan to destroy all life

Can Rex complete the mission in time before all life is extinguished?

There's nothing like playing a game on real hardware hooked up to a CRT...

Controls

This demo gives you a chance the play the first three levels. Escape the Thoros Foundation with the vaccine and survive a desperate dash through space!

All controls and descriptions of weapons and defensive items are available in-game from the main menu,

Background

This vertical shooter for the Commodore Amiga started off life as a SEUCK game back in 1993 but has been brought to life again thanks to the fantastic Scorpion Engine.

It's also my first game, which just goes to show how amazing Scorpion Engine is at giving someone as non-technical as me the chance to create games!

Great game, thanks.

Hi Hoyster Games,

Congratulations for completing the final demo of the game despite the data loss that happened to you two months ago, the final result is really fantastic!

We would like to convert this final version of your game to WHDLoad but with the ADF file we can't because it is NODOS, we would need a version installable on Hard Disk and we know that the Scorpion Engine is able to give this type of output: could you do it and share it with us or anyway here on itch.io?

If so, we will certainly create the Whdload of this version of the game, obviously making the icon in HiRes since the initial screen of the game has also changed, and we will share it with you: what do you think?

Thanks in advance for the feedback and see you soon!

Is the file with the latest game demo not corrupted? There is a problem launching the game.

What’s happening with it? It was all fine when I tested but will check again…

It works! Nice game!

Phew! And thank you ☺️

I’ve tested again in winUAE and on real hardware and haven’t encountered an issue. However to be sure I have re-exported the ADF and updated the file on the page. Hopefully it will work properly this time!

Ok that sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole but there was a memory problem on certain configurations. Had to do some jiggery pokery - specifically to level 1 - but all seems to be working now! Thanks and apologies!

Lots of updates since the last version, getting better. I added it to my new "Gameplay of New Amiga Games from March 2025" video along with other recently released games. Hope you enjoy the video.

Hi ! Really nice shmup, thanks for your commitment ! <3

Thank you so much, I’m really happy you like it! Full game is close to done so hopefully not too much longer before it’s available.

Hi Hoyster Games,

Great game indeed, congratulations! Our Amiga Vault Team is specialized in the creation/conversion of Amiga games and programs in standard WHDLoad format with specific slave, custom splash screen, hybrid icon (OldIcon+NewIcon+ColorIcon) compatible with all AmigaOS, and readme file.

As we have done with some Amiga games released in recent months (Ami-H.E.R.O, Ami Robbo 2, Better Dead Than Zed, Frank Brush, Ghosts 'n Goblins AGA, Hop To The Top, International Kopycat Plus, Kondi Krush, Metro Siege, Neon World, Pjusk, Sky Shapers, Soko-Ban, Spheroid, Trapped In The Tomb, Vigilante and Yoomp!) and as we will do for some games currently in development as soon as they are ready (Hyper Wings 2.21 HD, Soltys and Street Fighter), we just converted your game into WHDLoad format (look at attached pictures below:) and would like to share it with you so that, if you wish, you can include it as an additional version for the benefit of the Amiga community: what do you think of our proposal? It would be an honor and a pleasure for us to collaborate with you, if you like our idea you can contact us on facebook (user Amiga Vault) or by email (amigavault.contribution@gmail.com) if you prefer in order to define all the details.

Best Regards

Amiga Vault Team

Awesome game!

Thank you! I’m really pleased with how it’s going. Not long now until the full game (hopefully!)

Already looks and sounds good, even though it's not finished yet. I also included it in my new "Gameplay of New Amiga Games from February 2025" video, along with other recently released games. I hope you enjoy the video.

That’s fantastic, thank you! I’m hoping to get a fairly substantial update out for the demo in the next week or two so watch this space…

Nice game!
